This is a Community Message from Aylesbury Watch Office on Thursday 24 June 2010.

Several reports have been received of residents in Aylesbury Vale receiving unsolicited phone calls from a company claiming to be either Aylesbury Vale District Council (AVDC) or working with them, offering people reduced price loft insulation or new boilers at a minimal cost.

These calls are NOT being made by or on behalf AVDC and there is a concern that these calls are being made in order to obtain bank details or security details about peoples homes.

Please remind all watch members that these type of calls can use all manner of excuses to obtain the information they require, of which this is just one example. Do not give out personal information or bank details to unknown or unexpected callers, be they on the telephone or in person. Do not enter into any agreements or make appointments for them to visit your home.

If you need work carrying out at your home, employ a trusted trader, whom you already know or by recommendation from other customers. Advice can be obtained by visiting www.consumerdirect.gov.uk

You can also register your telephone number with the Telephone Preference Service. This is the official central opt out register where you can record your preference not to receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls. You can do this online at www.mpsonline.org.uk or by calling 0845 070 0707.
