Diamond Wedding
Michael and Yvonne Edmonds of Lower Green Farm celebrated their Diamond Wedding on Boxing Day last year with a gathering of family and friends.

They were very proud to receive a celebratory message from the Queen. I don’t suppose Christmas jumpers like the one Michael is wearing in the photos were around 60 years ago. Congratulations and all the very best to them both for many more years together.

Pothole Problems
The Parish Council would like to draw your attention to a press release recently issued by Bucks County Council about the winter pothole menace. Parish Council members will report potholes as they see them but it is also important that all of us report any potholes by using the potholes hotline report line as requested by Bucks C.C who usually will respond quickly to the reports if any safety issue is involved.
“This winter’s weather has been tough on Buckinghamshire’s roads – while the heavy snowfall in December was the most remarkable weather event, the worst conditions for roads are actually when the ground temperature fluctuates constantly between just above and just below zero. Pothole formation is accelerated by this “freeze-thaw” effect, whereby moisture gets into small cracks in the road surface and expands when it freezes, then thaws out when the temperature rises. This process repeats until the road surface begins to break up and potholes are formed. “Transport for Buckinghamshire” will investigate every pothole reported to them and react on a risk based prioritisation process – put, simply that means the worst ones will be attended to first as a matter of urgency. But we’re not mind readers and the road network is far too vast for us to possibly know where all the potholes are, so we need members of the public to report them to us either using the online form which only takes a few minutes, or by calling if it’s dangerous or an emergency. I would ask that everyone be patient while we deal with the fallout of a bad winter .”
Potholes should be reported, as well as any other road issue, using the Report forms on the County Council website at www.buckscc.gov.uk/services/transport-and-roads/report-a-problem/report-a-pothole, or to phone 01296 382416 or 486630 (out of hours).
Every cloud has a silver lining, however, when 3 separate vehicle incidents with the same pothole in Winchendon Road on a recent Saturday afternoon, evening, resulted in the occupants having to wait for help from the AA. They were very lucky to be able to seek and find refuge, warmth and food and drink from The Bell while they waited and The Bell was glad of their custom. Unfortunate for these drivers who had spent an enjoyable afternoon at Waddesdon Manor for their day to end so unhappily. The pothole has now been repaired.

Fraud Warning / Reminder

This is a message sent via Thames Valley Alert and has been sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police.

Residents in Aylesbury Vale have reported receiving unsolicited telephone calls from people often claiming to be police officers.

They have claimed to be investigating a fraudulent transaction on the victim’s credit / debit cards, or suspicious transaction on their bank account.

The offenders give fictitious officer name / shoulder number and in a recent report, in Aston Sandford, the resident was encouraged to dial 999 to check out their identity.

The line had been kept open by the offender, so the victim was not actually connecting to the emergency services.

In Aylesbury a victim was encouraged to go to the bank to withdraw cash and a courier later turned up to pick up the cash / bank cards.

Please warn neighbours, family and friends, especially if they are old or vulnerable, not to pass information on to any unsolicited callers. Remember:-
  • never tell anyone your PIN number
  • never give personal information or bank account details to anyone over the phone
  • never hand over your card, money or valuables to someone at the door.
Check the identity of anyone you are dealing with either in person or over the phone. Call the organisation they claim to be working for, but make sure they have cleared the line and that you have your normal dialling tone.

If you are suspicious of an unexpected visitor to your home call the police on 101, or on 999 in an emergency. If you are suspicious of an unsolicited telephone call, that you think might be fraudulent, report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

Further fraud prevention advice can be found on this section of the Thames Valley Police website.

Parish Council meeting Monday January 15 at 7.30pm at Chearsley Cricket Club

Chearsley Parish Council are developing an online messaging service to keep parishioners updated on the Council’s work in the village and to encourage feedback from all members of our community. Nic Brown, the Council’s chairman has already sent out a message about the forthcoming Budget Council Meeting using this facility to around 100 villagers whose names and emails are known to them. If you did not receive this email communication and would like to do so in future, please send your contact details to either John Lewis at johnlewis@doconsult.com of John Howard at jnh@dbmc.co.uk.

This important meeting next Monday decides the Council’s budget for the year 2018/2019 based on what we would like to spend, and what that means for our local Council Tax contribution to Chearsley (known as the “Precept”).

Over the past 2 years, the Council have been increasing the Precept as the historically very low-level challenges the Council’s ability to maintain the fabric of the village. This has been difficult but necessary as the AVDC and Bucks County Council Tax elements have been capped and Government funds diminished in recent years making funding ever more challenging.

At the meeting on Monday, there will be a full discussion of what the Council have been doing since their presentation at the Annual Parish Meeting in 2017 at which they received full support from the parishioners to get on with the job the councillors are elected to do. Please attend this important meeting so that you can hear at first hand what is planned for next year and for the Council to gain support from the village to continue the works that are felt to be important for moving Chearsley onwards and upwards. It will be a formal Parish council meeting and there will be an opportunity at the start and end of the meeting for villagers to express their views and observations.

Nic Brown encourages your attendance at this meeting as it is critically important for him and his fellow councillors that villagers are satisfied with the direction and vision the Council has for Chearsley.

Happy New Year to you all!
Please let me know details of special birthdays, anniversaries or events, thank-you's and any news which you are happy to have broadcast on the Chearsley web. I try to learn of most things going on, but it can prove difficult!

Poppy Appeal
I have heard from Peter Grimsdell with details of Poppy selling in Chearsley in 2017. A total of £884.49 was raised, mainly made up from door to door selling by Sue Grimsdell and Joy Payne of £720.38. Sales at the village shop raised £58.64 and at The Bell £105.47. This was an increase of £104.19 from last year. This makes for a great finale for Sue in her last year of Poppy selling in Chearsley, after taking over from Sylvia Hicks 20 years ago.
Congratulations to Sue for being responsible for raising so much money for The Royal British Legion and welcome to Joy who has agreed to be the main Poppy seller in Chearsley in future. A grand total of £2,580.32 was made by Cuddington, Chearsley and Nether Winchendon, as compared to £2,465.51 in 2016. Peter and Sue have now left the village and with work on their new home in Haddenham going to plan, they hope to move from their rented accommodation in the Spring.

Volunteers for taxi service
More help is needed by villagers who would be prepared to spare some time to take Peter Martin to see his wife, Alva, who is in hospital in High Wycombe. Alva has been in hospital for over a month, first at Stoke Mandeville and now in High Wycombe after a fall in her home which broke her back as well as recovering slowly from a stroke. Peter - who can no longer drive - has been able to visit Alva daily due to the kindness of a small team of about 10 villagers who have taken turns to take and collect Peter.
As time goes on and Alva is likely to be in hospital for some time, it would be appreciated if others could volunteer to help. Andy Yorke, Peter’s neighbour, initiated the rota which is now run online using Doodle . Anyone who would like to help Peter and Alva can go to the Chearsley Taxi Doodle Calendar to register and to then tick the day and time (12.30pm from Bernard's Close, or 4.30pm from Wycombe Hospital) when you can take or fetch Peter. The system is pretty easy, (well it has to be as I managed to make sense of it), but if you have any difficulties, Andy Yorke can be contacted at info@sensorcentre.com.
Many who still live in Chearsley will remember Alva as a very well respected and wonderful first teacher of their children including two of my own who were lucky enough to attend Chearsley school. Peter, who was also a teacher, retired now for many years, has always had a great love of Chearsley and its people, and a wonderful supporter of its many events and occasions and appreciating the importance of the shop, the pub and the church. I know he has drawn great comfort from being able to visit Alva everyday and from the many cards and acts of kindness he has been given. Please help if you can.

Bingo at The Bell
The first Bingo evening of the year will be on Tuesday, January 9 with Eyes Down around 8.45pm.
Quiz at The Bell Following the normal pattern, Quiz night continues to be held on the Sunday after the Bingo night and will be held on Sunday January 14 at 8pm.

Services at St Nicholas :

  • Sunday January 7 Family Holy Communion at 10am
  • Sunday January 14 Morning Celebration at 10am and Evensong at 6pm
