Boules Challenge
This re-arranged match of Chearsley against Cuddington took place on Sunday September 2 at Cuddington and resulted in another success for Chearsley when they narrowly beat Cuddington in some hard fought matches. Chearsley now have the silver cup to prove it, which will be on show at The Bell. Nic Brown would like to thank everyone who took part in this inter village challenge with good spirit and friendship. A provisional date for a Winter Boules event has been made for Sunday December 2 when Chearsley will be the hosts at the Cuddington Playing Fields location, when they will be offering warming refreshments.
Chearsley Show
The Show team under the leadership of Joy, set up the hall on Saturday September 1st when all entries and exhibits were displayed in grand style luxuriating in the wonderful space of our new hall.
The domestic section continued to attract increasing numbers of entries, including some fabulous and imaginative Show Stopper Cakes. This compensated for the lower vegetable and flower entries which had suffered from the intense heat and lack of rain this year. Rachel Sampson’s Scarecrow made an amusing if lonely parade, as there was only 1 entry in this new category. Congratulations to Rachel for her ingenuity, deserving her appropriate prize. Hopefully, there will be more scarecrow entries next year.
Overall Winner of the Show for the Vic Walker cup was Julian George, who was also winner of the Best Vegetables cup. Other winners were Best photo – Joy Payne; Best art – Jann Grimshaw; Best Craft – Jack Lazaruk; Best Children’s entry – Jessica Taylor; Men’s Jam tarts – Freddie Taylor; Best domestic – Ruth Holland; Best Flowers – Joy Payne; Best Flower arrangement – Jann Grimshaw; Cup for craftsmanship – Jack Lazaruk and Best Fruit – Michael Heybrook. Special mention should go to Olivia Sawrey Cookson who won the Show Stopper Cup – and now also of pot hole decorating fame.
Joy thanked everyone for coming, particularly, our vicar, Richard who presented the prizes, and to everyone who entered. It is hoped that next year, there will be more gardeners and talented bakers, photographers and crafters taking up the challenge to show off their skills. Don’t be influenced and put off by Joe Grundy and his competitive spirit about the forthcoming Fruit and Veg show in The Archers! Chearsley Show is a very friendly, fun event. Well done to Joy for putting everything together again, as well as organising Meadow Song, being church warden, chief church flower arranger and many other things. Thank you Joy. Oh yes, Happy Birthday for Friday.

A beautiful day Sunday September 2nd in the beautiful garden of Ann Persson when many villagers gathered to hear Paul (Joy’s brother) and the lovely Laura sing a variety of well known songs from Shows.
Chearsley Classic and Vintage Fun Day
The weather is looking mainly fine for this coming Sunday 9 for the 7th year of this event , the original idea of Fred Crawford, which will be held in the grounds of the Cricket Club. Entry and parking is free and there will be programmes, detailing events of the day, available on entry for a donation towards the development of Junior Cricket at the Club. The number of vehicles on show increases every year and this year there should be 250 on view of vintage cars, motor bikes, tractors, lorries, buses and steam engines.
As in previous years, there will be a children’s mini fun fair, barbecue prepared and served by Team Chearsley chefs, teas and home made cakes, outside bar with real ales, ice cream van, fine coffee, fish and chip van, bottle tombola, raffle and new this year, a Gin and Pimms Tent. There will be stalls selling arts and craft and fresh fruit and vegetables and Dotty Sweets. Messy Church of Chearsley Church will be providing entertainment for young children in their tent throughout the day. During the afternoon, it is planned for there to be a Spitfire Flypast ,courtesy of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The timing of this has yet to be finalized. Listen out for more information on the day.
There will also be the opportunity to enjoy a classic coach tour of the surrounding area complete with commentary. It promises to be a great day out for all the family. Have a look round at all the exhibits, get something to eat and drink and sit and listen to the live music. Don’t forget to try your luck on the popular Bottle Tombola and to buy some raffle tickets. The draw for the raffle will take place towards the end of the afternoon, followed by the presentation of The Fred Crawford Cup which goes to Fred’s choice of Best in Show.
Gates open to the public at 11am, ending at 5pm. I did hear that Steve Fox of our local Red Kite radio will be at the show. Watch out for him. Red Kite radio is broadcast from Haddenham Garden Centre and can be found at 107.2fm. Enjoy the day.
Saturday September 22 - The Chilterns Classic Sportive Cycling Event
The Parish Council has been made aware of this cycling event. There are 3 routes, 1 of which passes through Chearsley and 2 through Cuddington. The organisers estimate there will be 450 rides on the route through here. The event starts in Amersham from 7.45am to 9am which might help to estimate when they will be around here.
