Interruption to Water Supply

Thames Water are intending to attend to the water leak on the Winchendon Road tomorrow, Thursday 25th June.
Repairs are not expected to take long, but there is the possibility that the water main may be shut off for an unknown period, affecting the supply to homes in the village.
It may be wise to keep at least your kettle topped up, if not any spare water bottles.

Thanks to Julia Witcher for the warning!

Chearsley Show
Please make a note that the annual village show will be held on Saturday September 5 in the village hall. The show is open to all villagers to exhibit flowers, fruit and vegetables they have grown, with categories for baking and preserves, art and craft and a special section for children. It is a small, friendly affair, with cash prizes only for children, and not without a certain amount of rivalry and competition.
Now is the time to be thinking of entries particularly in the art and craft sections – a model or photograph or craft picture which you can take or make during the summer. The affect of weather and garden pests will play a part in any decision nearer the show date as to what vegetables, fruit and flowers will be available for entry. Entries will have to be submitted in the week before the show to enable the great amount of background paper work to be completed before the Saturday.
More details of the Schedule will be available and distributed shortly. It is a fun village day even for those who decide they have nothing to enter. The public are invited in the afternoon to view the entries and enjoy a cup of tea and cake. So, remember the date – September 5.

Fond Farewell
John Wynburne, who has been vicar of Chearsley, Long Crendon and Nether Winchendon for 6 years is retiring at the end of August. Everyone is welcome to join him to say goodbye and to raise a glass or two to him at The Bell on Friday July 3 from 7pm. John’s Farewell Service will be held at Long Crendon Church on Sunday July 19 at 10am.

Jazz Picnic
Friends of St Mary’s Long Crendon invite everyone on Sunday June 28 from 12.30 to 3.30pm to the garden of Wapping Cottage, High Street, Long Crendon to enjoy a picnic to the sounds of Jazz provided by SWAY with entertainment for children of all ages. Please bring your own picnic and drinks. Tickets cost £10 per adult, £2 per child available from Geoff Smith on 01844 208205 or email friends@FSMLongCrendon.org. It will be held in the Church House if wet.

Planting at Haddenham and Thame Parkway Railway Station
I notice that Vanessa Doyle of Chilton Road, Chearsley has been busy planting again at the station. A new wooden construction with seats at the front of the station designed by Rodney Lovell of Landmark Garden Design has been built with planting by Vanessa. If I had had more time before I caught the train, I would have had a more detailed look. I can only remember lavender bushes and pebbles with very attractive effect. The triangular beds created last year still look very good with lovely begonias whose leaves do turn scarlet in winter as Vanessa had said. This is not the end of the planting there, as another area is under creation.

Birthday Greetings to Dennis Gascoyne of Thame, a regular at The Bell on many occasions over the years especially for Bingo Sessions and Sunday evenings. Dennis celebrates his “special” birthday on Saturday June 20.

Arthur and Joyce lived in Winchendon Road for many years. Arthur, who had been in ill health and in and out of hospital for a long time died on May 1st aged 86. Joyce who had also been in poor health died on May 12 aged 83. A very sad time for all the family. Chearsley Parish Council met on Monday May 18 with 6 members of the public present. Nic Brown was elected to continue as Chairman with John Lewis as the Vice Chairman and Clare Clark as the Financial Officer. Other appointments for other committees will be made at the June meeting, when hopefully the 2 new parish councillors will be able to attend. During the public session, it was asked for the agenda to include the reading of any correspondence received. This request was agreed to. The problem of speeding in the village was raised and it was confirmed that the police do periodically carry out speed checks. The village vehicle activated sign remains out of action. This will be looked into and when the other sign will be available.
It was suggested that Chearsley could join with Cuddington and Dinton at the meetings of the Traffic Action Group concerning speeding problems in villages and main roads. The parking problem caused by building work in the Elm Brook Close area was again discussed.
Chearsley’s entry in the Best Kept Village was confirmed. Cuddington Bridge Closure the council will write to Bucks County Council to complain that little or no notice was given about this.
Village plan – no progress on any of the action plans with the exception of the village hall and possible cycle route to Haddenham, had been made. Volunteers are needed. Kerbing quotes have now been received for 4 areas in the Dark Lane area at a cost of around £8,000 which exceeds the amount put aside for kerbing, but it was agreed for this work to go ahead. Although the roads should not be widened to accommodate large vehicles, some digging into the banks will have to be carried out for the stones to be laid.
Noticeboard - a replacement one by the bus stop, half glazed and lockable and half open will be decided upon and ordered. The benches on The Green and by The War Memorial are in need of attention. The flag pole is to be moved to be more visible nearer to the War Memorial. Village white gates need repair and paint. Quotes to be obtained for this work.
Planning applications a site meeting at Bees Cottage was arranged. The purchase of a defibrillator for the village would be discussed at the next council meeting. The village’s new District councillor is now Mike Hawkin who should be informed and invited to attend the monthly meetings, as should Margaret Aston, our County Councillor.
The next Parish Council meeting will now be held on Monday June 8 at 7.30pm in the village hall. Details of the agenda and Minutes of the previous meeting will be displayed on the notice board shortly before June 8. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come to these meetings when there are 2 opportunities for public comments and views

No Dogs at The Cricket Field
The cricket field gates will now only be open on match days and locked at all other times due to the persistent problem of dog walkers in the field failing to clear up after their dogs. The Club is sorry to have to take this action, but despite many requests for dog mess to be cleared up, the problem continues. For everyone’s health and comfort, particularly the grounds man who has the very unpleasant job of finding and clearing up the dog mess and for the many juniors who now attend the club, there is no choice but to lock the gates and make the ground a no-dog area.

Building work at Byeways, The Green
Over the coming weeks there may well be some minor disruptions to the road bordering Byeways and Prospect cottage as works to the extension and refurbishment of Byeways continue. This may mean that on occasions for limited times it will be best to use the road past The Bell. Nic Brown is keen to keep any disruption to a minimum and will ask all trades people working on the project to ensure they use the highest standards of courtesy and sensitivity in the area around the ongoing works. He apologises for any inconvenience which may be caused.

Bingo at The Bell
The next Bingo session will be on Tuesday June 2 with Eyes Down around 8.30pm.There are good cash prizes to be won. Come early and enjoy a meal for a special price for Bingo players, or take advantage of the 2 meals for £15 being offered Tuesday to Thursday evenings. Don’t forget the Chase The Ace game on Friday nights, with tickets available to buy throughout the week. Coffee and cake mornings every Friday from 10 to 12pm and the meat raffle on Sunday afternoons. Go-Karting If you are interested in joining in with others from The Bell in go-karting in Aylesbury and coming back to The Bell for a curry meal on Sunday May 31, please contact Sharon at The Bell for more information.

Long Crendon Magna Carta celebrations are taking place over the weekend June 13 and 14 to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta at Runnymede by King John in 1215. Long Crendon has a direct link to this important piece of history as the then Lord of the Manor, William Marshal the elder, regarded as “the greatest knight in Christendom” and his son were involved in the production of the document. William Marshal, the Younger was one of the 25 rebel barons present at Runnymede to witness the sealing.
There will be a Medieval Jousting Tournament and Pageant on the Recreation Ground on Saturday June 15 from 2 to 5.30pm with free entry. The Long Crendon Morris Dancers will be performing and there will be falconry displays, a jousting tournament, archery competitions for adults and children, children’s activities and many other attractions. As there will be horses and birds of prey present, visitors are asked not to bring their dogs. There will also be little parking space. Maybe, walk or use the bus?
Tickets for the evening barn dance and BBQ with licensed bar cost £10 to include refreshments and can be obtained from the village centre or call 01844 208837. Numbers are limited, so book in good time. On the Sunday June 14 there will be a church service at St Mary’s at 1030am and a Peal of Bells led by Andrew Haseldine at 12pm which will be part of a national peal of bells celebrating the anniversary of Magna Carta. The peal will be a new one and if they are successful in ringing it, this will give them the right to name it and are intending that it should refer to William Marshal.

Any offers of help on the day would be much appreciated. Please contact Angela Gray on 07944 290264 or email her at angela@grayemail.co.uk
