'Historic Chearsley' Exhibition - Sunday 2nd June at the Village Hall

A final reminder that a ‘Historic Chearsley’ exhibition will take place at the Village Hall on Sunday 2nd June. The details are shown on the poster below.
As advised in a previous mail, a number of fascinating resources will be on display – including 12 photographic boards packed with fascinating images of Chearsley in years gone by. These were put together by Ted and Ann Hooton to launch their book ‘Chearsley Living Through History’ in 1993…..and we are delighted that Ann will be joining us on the day.

We’ve also been pledged some further interesting photographs and village memorabilia by members of our community and all Chearsley residents are invited to share anything which might be of interest and add to our understanding of Chearsley’s fascinating heritage.

If you have anything that would contribute to our exhibition, we would be delighted to receive it, or if you would be interested in joining our group, please contact any of the following:
Anne Adams               paxos.aa@gmail.com
John Cragg                  johncragg181@gmail.com
John Howard               jnh@dbmc.co.uk
Sara Turnbull              sjt3456@gmail.com

Either pass it over to one of us or bring it along on the day – but one way or the other, it would help with our organisation of the exhibition, if you could let us know in advance.

There’s no charge for entrance and, as you’ll see below, refreshments will also be served from 1 o’clock onwards.

Best Kept Village Competition
The Parish Council has entered Chearsley into this year’s Competition in the category of villages with a population of between 500 and 1500 inhabitants. Judging will take place by 3 judges in an unannounced visit to the village anytime in June and July. They will be taking into consideration and awarding marks for the overall appearance of the village, lack of litter, evidence of community effort, areas round The Green, children’s play area, the village hall, shop and pub, war memorial and the graveyard and notice boards. The Parish Council have been very active in tidying up Chearsley, restoring the war memorial, installing a new noticeboard which is well kept and up-to-date. There are new Chearsley signs on entry into the village on all 4 main roads, and the Council has been very persistent in their successful efforts to have pot holes in the village roads mended. Now, with the verges on the main roads cut, the Council is encouraging residents to think how we can all contribute to maintain our village as an attractive place, in the very least by keeping areas around our homes tidy and litter free, an opportunity to show we care about our village and are proud of it.
For the future, the Parish Council has decided to support a proposal from Michael Heybrook to consider the addition of more “green” and environmentally responsible criteria to the competition format and the Council is in discussion with the organisers of The Best Kept Village Competition on this.

Family Village Party Saturday June 8
Time to start the Summer parties and a chance for all villagers to come together on The Green and at The Bell. The Bell is putting on a Beer Festival all weekend, and a Pig Roast on Saturday Evening for the Village Party. There will be entertainment for everyone, not only children, in the form of amazing, magical Colonel Custard. Music in the evening to get us all dancing and having a good time with a Disco and Street Life live on stage.

Winchendon Fete Saturday June 8
A busy Saturday, but time to visit Winchendon Fete in the lovely grounds of Winchendon House from 2pm before partying in Chearsley.

Chearsley Show 2019
This will be held on the first Saturday in September - September 7 at The Village Hall and plans are going well. All judges for the various categories have been booked and brochures will be delivered in due course to every house to give every one the opportunity of taking part. It is hoped there will be more entries than last year when entries were rather disappointing, attributed mostly to many families still being away as the schools had not then started. There are categories for flowers, flower arrangements, vegetables, fruit, domestic including a popular Show stopper cake again, art and craft, photography .
This year, there will be an opportunity for children to create their own Show Stopper Cake in the children’s section including fairy cakes, photos, pictures, decorated stone and other opportunities to show off their skills. On the day, there will be a Scarecrow Parade when a prize will be awarded for the most creative. A chance for the whole family to get imaginative. Get planting, making and baking and watch out for the attractive brochure designed by Alicia Howard delivered to your house soon.

Chearsley Cricket Club
The season has now started with mixed results so far. Spectators are always welcome at the ground at the Saturday matches – a chance to sit in the sun (possibly) and enjoy a drink from the bar and to cheer the Chearsley side on. The ground is being used on Sundays for a few weeks by a Club which doesn’t have its own facilities.

Plans are well in hand for the 8th year of the Classic & Vintage Fun Day in the Cricket Club grounds on Sunday September 15, which will have some new attractions and the biggest show to date. Entries of cars are ahead of numbers this time last year. Offers to volunteer to help on the day would be much appreciated. For more information, go to www.ccvfd.co.uk or follow the link for Chearsley Cricket Club at www.pitchero.com/clubs/chearsleycricketclub.

Sian Lewis, who has been very involved with the Club, will be cycling with a friend from London to Paris over 3 days in September to support three cancer charities. This will mark the 10th anniversary of Sian’s mother’s death from Ovarian cancer.

There is a Just Giving Page for donations at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/sian-lewis27. They have already raised well over £3000 towards their target of £5,000.

Looking ahead to November, the annual Dinner and Dance has been booked for Saturday November 16 this year at The Oxford Belfry. Tickets will be £36 per person for a 3 course dinner and dancing. Contact Lesley Arnott on 01844 290153 for more information.

Livestock Worrying: Advice for dog owners.
Thames Valley Police have issued the following advice to dog owners that livestock worrying is becoming an increasing issue, especially now that the lambing season is well under way. Livestock killed or injured as the result of an out of control dog is a criminal offence. Advice is to keep your dog on a lead. Dog walkers that use open access land must keep their dog on a short lead (a maximum of 2 metres) between March 1 and July 31. If near livestock, this applies at all times. Stick to paths and public rights of way; look out for and follow signs. At this time of year, some livestock owners restrict access to their land to protect their animals. It is your responsibility to ensure that your dog is under control at all times.

Cuddington Matinee Cinema
Mamma Mia Here We Go Again, a musical romantic comedy will be shown at The Bernard Hall in Cuddington on Monday May 20th at 1.30pm. A Midsummer Night’s Tour takes place on Friday June 21 from 7.30pm to 9.30pm when you are invited to join Jackie Hunt, Turn End’s gardener for a glass of bubbly and a leisurely stroll around the garden to celebrate the longest day. To book tickets email turnendtrustevents@gmail.com or phone and leave a message on 07591018601.
If Turn End is not known to you, it is well worth a visit. It is one of 3 houses designed and built in the 1960s by architect Peter Aldington which were listed Grade 11 in 2006. Turn End garden was listed Grade 11 in November 2017 by Historic England and added to the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic interest in England. Historic Chearsley Launch - Village Hall Sunday 2nd June

You may be aware that a small group of Chearsley residents (Anne Adams, John Cragg, Sarah Turnbull and John Howard) got together earlier this year to discuss the possibility of starting a project, which would build on the work of Ted Hooton’s wonderful book, “Chearsley – Living Through History” and bring the story up to the present day.

Following these discussions, a ‘Historic Chearsley’ exhibition will take place at the Village Hall on Sunday 2nd June.

A number of fascinating resources will be on display and all Chearsley residents are invited to share anything which might be of interest and add to our understanding of Chearsley’s fascinating heritage. For example, photos, family memorabilia or reminiscences.

We are also delighted to announce that Ann Hooton, wife of Ted and a major contributor to his wonderful book ‘Chearsley – Living Through History’ will be joining us on the day.

If you have anything that would contribute to our exhibition, we would be delighted to receive it, or if you would be interested in joining our group, please contact any of the following:
