The 4th annual Cricket match held in honour of Ann Veness was held on Sunday August 21 at the Cricket Club when 2 teams of 9 took part, captained by James Veness and former Chearsley player, C J Thompson. On the batting front, Alex Hubert top scored with 78 and was named Man of the Match. Tom Gadsby and Nick Grimsdell both made 50. Duncan Fielding was most successful bowler with 2 for 16 and special mention should be made of Timmy (Jonty) Morbey’s fielding which included a direct hit run out.
Richard Veness appreciated all the support by everyone who played or came up to watch this Memorial match in memory of his wife,Ann with particular thanks to the cake providers, umpires Bob Walker and Pete Redfern, scorer Terry Gadsby who also helped Adam Lazaruk with the post game BBQ. Chearsley Show September 3
Show Day is very nearly here. An annual village event which has been held in the village hall for several years and can only take place with thanks to the hard work of a small team of villagers presided over by Joy Payne. There are a few rules to be kept to. Entrants must live in Chearsley and only 1 entry is allowed in any 1 class, but there is no limit to the number of classes entered. All horticultural exhibits must have been in the entrant’s possession for at least 2 months (so no going to the Garden Centre on Saturday morning for a pot plant or to Waitrose for some tomatoes!) Entry forms have to be with Joy Payne of 1 Bernards Close by Wednesday August 31 together with the fee of 20p per item.
A considerable amount of organisation and planning is required to prepare for the day after the entry forms are submitted, so please ensure these are with Joy in time. On the day, the hall will be open for the setting out of entries by exhibitors from 8.30 until 10.15am ready for the judging at 10.30am. The Show is then open to the public from 2.45pm, admission £1 with free entry for children. At 3.30pm there will be the presentation of awards and trophies and cash prizes for children’s entries by our new Reverend, Richard Phillips who we are delighted to welcome to his first Chearsley event. The raffle will be drawn after this.
Teas are on sale throughout the afternoon. It is a very friendly, small village show with only a tiny amount of rivalry and competition and its success depends on the support and enthusiasm of villagers taking part. So please try to find something to exhibit and come and join in.

Chearsley Challenge and Barn Dance Saturday September 10
The Cricket Club and Village Hall committee have combined forces to organise a fun Obstacle Race afternoon for the whole family followed by a Barn Dance and Picnic to take place on Saturday September 10, as a run up to The Chearsley Village Classic & Vintage Fun Day taking place at the Cricket Club the next day. All proceeds from the afternoon will go to the New Village hall fund. The “Challenge” will start at 4pm and will include jumping over hay bales, horse jumps, crawling under netting and wheel barrow races. The cost will be £3 per child and £10 for a family to enter.
If you are interested in coming along, please let Alex Wall Morris, Angela Grey or Antonia Stratford know or email the Village Hall Committee at chearsleyvillagehall@hotmail.co.uk.
The Barn Dance and family picnic will start after the obstacle races at around 6pm. Entry to this is free, however tables will be available to purchase on the night. The bar, of course, will be open throughout the afternoon and evening. Please come for a fun day and support your village.

Bingo and Quiz Nights at The Bell return
The Summer holiday month of August might nearly be over and the nights are starting to draw in, but there are the regular monthly Bingo and Quiz nights at The Bell to look forward to which restart in the first week of September. Bingo will be held on Tuesday September 6 with Eyes Down at around 8.30pm. There are some good cash prizes to be won, depending on how many take part, but it is not unusual for the final Full House of the evening to be worth £60. So your Bingo evening could turn out to be profitable as well as a very enjoyable time. The Sunday Quiz follows on Sunday September 11 at 8pm when it is time to get your thinking caps on and come and find out how much you know, or don’t know. Come on your own and join a table or come in a group. It really doesn’t matter. Everyone is welcome

Calendar Launch
There are several ideas being considered for raising money to build the new village hall. One of these, now in the process of being developed is a Calendar of Chearsley Boys in various poses and settings around the village. Many will remember the very successful calendar of Chearsley girls a number of years ago, which raised a considerable amount of money for the Fete. Maybe this one will be as equally successful. A launch of the eagerly awaited Calendar is planned for Saturday October 15 in The Bell from 6.30pm when the calendars will be available for purchase at £10 each.

Chearsley Show
Brochures giving details of all possible exhibits at this annual Show in the village hall on Saturday September 3 have now been delivered to all houses in the village. Our annual show is a very friendly, small, low-key village show (with only a tiny amount of rivalry and competition) and with the emphasis of fun and taking part, so please have a good look through the schedule and try to find something to enter and come along to join in. It is a lovely village afternoon for everyone. If you have lost your entry form, please contact Joy Payne on 01844 208513.
New this year in the flower section is an entry for 3 stems of a flowering shrub and 3 stems of chrysanthemums. The theme for the flower arrangement is to celebrate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty The Queen. There are classes for children including fairy cakes, photographs, garden on a plate and a decorated hard- boiled egg, a new class which proved very popular last year, all with the incentive of winning a small cash prize and even a new Toddler time category with sweets as a prize.
Entries have to be submitted by Wednesday August 31 to Joy Payne, the Show’s President, to enable all the necessary paper work to be completed in time for Saturday.
I am not a cake maker or art and craft person, but love my garden and try to find some flowers or vegetables to enter, which is a case of going round the garden on the entry deadline day to see what might be available. I might, a few days before, try to put a ban on the family picking the runner beans or courgettes for that night’s meal so that there is a chance of having some suitable ones ready for the Show.

Chearsley Village Classic & Vintage Fun Day

Entries are still being accepted for classic and vintage vehicles at this 5th year of the Show which is being held in the Cricket Club grounds on Sunday September 11. Please log on to www.ccvfd.co.uk for more details. This promises to be another great free family day out on our doorstep with the added attractions of a Spitfire and a Hurricane flypast during the afternoon.

Sunshine Club Charity Fashion Show
The Sunshine Club will be hosting another popular Charity Fashion Show in the gardens of Tyringham Hall on Sunday August 28 at 2pm. Affordably priced clothing which may be bought afterwards will be modelled by local girls of all ages and maybe even a brave male. The ticket price of £5 includes a cream tea and this fun afternoon takes place whatever the weather, under gazebos if wet. Everyone is welcome to come, men included, to help raise money so that the long established Sunshine Club may continue. Please phone Liz on 01844 299150 for tickets.

Free Taster Lesson in Lip Reading and Managing Hearing Loss
If you are one of the 1 in 6 people in the UK with a hearing loss or struggle to hear in noisy situations, you might have thought about joining a lip reading class. Free one-hour tasters are being offered during Lip reading Awareness Week September 12 to 16. Even good hearing aids don’t restore perfect hearing.
Learning to lip read is a skill which can improve how much you understand when people speak to you. Classes are small and friendly and also provide information on coping strategies and assistive equipment. A class is being held at Haddenham Medical Centre on Thursday September 15 at 11am, as well as others throughout Bucks. Please contact judy.lipreading@gmail.com or ring 07837 993923 for more information.

Village News

with Margaret Morbey

I am sorry I was unable to write a village column last week. My daughter, her husband and our two small grandchildren visited from Barcelona for a week, so it was a matter of playing in the garden in the lovely weather with them rather than struggling for words indoors at the computer. Poor me!

Parish Council Meeting held on Monday July 18 - These are my notes of this meeting held under the chairmanship of John Lewis in the absence of Nic Brown with 3 other councillors and 4 members of the public present. During the public session, an overgrown hedge in Winchendon Road was complained about and the Council agreed to contact the owner of the hedge concerned. Paul Bown agreed to investigate the whereabouts of the dog waste bin which has gone missing in Church Lane.
  • Village Roads: The on-going problem of potholes in the village roads was considered. The Council considered that constant pressure must be maintained with Transport for Bucks in the hope of eventually having the holes filled in. Villagers to be asked to ring 0845 2302882 with particular complaints to emphasise the problem.
  • Vehicle Survey in Chearsley: John Howard reported that a second survey of LGVs and HGVs had now been completed with thanks to the volunteers which again showed heavy use of the Long Crendon, Waddesdon roads. A meeting of the 4 villages involved in the survey and Paul Irvine of Bucks County Council would be held in August to discuss the results. Speeding in the village was also noted and the chaos and danger caused on school days with school buses manoeuvring . An overall look at traffic problems is needed.
  • Planning Matters: Site meetings were arranged at The Lodge, Church Lane where plans for a new house have been submitted and Bramley House, Shupps Lane where widening of the access is requested.
  • Kerbing: There is now a new list of suitable contractors to approach for carrying out the kerbing work when decisions made at a site meeting of the Parish Council have been made.
  • Railings near the notice board: Julia has offered to paint these. The new notice board, new position of a new bus timetable to the side of the bus shelter and erection of the new flagpole are in the hands of Nic Brown and he should be encouraged to complete these as soon as possible.
  • Parking: At a previous council meeting, it had been suggested that a “Please Don’t Park here “ sign could be affixed to the wall near The Old Farmhouse. The progress of this was questioned. It was noted that the Chearsley sign in Chilton Road was missing. A new one would be provided by AVDC but not village gates. The cost of obtaining a “Please drive carefully” sign would be investigated.
  • Flag Man: The Council were delighted that Martin Hearmon of The Old Forge, Aylesbury Road had volunteered to be in charge of raising and lowering the flag on appropriate days.
  • New Village Hall progress: It was reported that planning permission had now been received and 3 proposals to carry out the building work had been received. Applications for funding was now underway. Antonia Stratford was to be congratulated on the time, effort and enthusiasm she had spent on this project.
  • Defibrillator: Clare Lazaruk and Angela Gray have now taken over responsibility for purchasing this and it is hoped it will soon be in place by the shop. Next Meeting There will be no meeting during August.
  • The next meeting will be on Monday September 17 at 7.30pm in the village hall.

Chairman’s Match in memory of Steve Vear and John Tribe
This was held on Sunday July 17 in glorious sunshine. A lovely afternoon when villagers and friends of both John and Steve came to remember these 2 great Club stalwarts and to watch cricket played between the Chairman’s XI and a Chearsley club side. The John Tribe Cup was presented by his son, John Talbot and grandson Sam to the winning Chearsley XI side captained by Matt Ricketts, and Karen Vear presented a piece of cricket art made by Ian Perkins and colleagues to Man of the Match, 14 year old Rory Gillis who bagged the wickets of 5 senior players in the Chairman’s XI. Thank you to Chairman, Ian Houseman for organising the afternoon and to Ian Perkins for donating a bottle of champagne for a toast to Steve.

Junior Cricket club awards Evening
This was held at the Cricket pavilion on Tuesday July 19 when the junior cricketers and proud Mums and Dads gathered to celebrate another fantastic season. The club now has 100 registered junior players, including 40 girls. Head Coach, Dave Richards praised all the youngsters who turned up regularly for the Tuesday evening coaching sessions.
Particular mention was made by him of 14 year old Rory Gillis who claimed the wickets of 5 senior players during the recent Chairman’s Match winning the Steve Vear Man of the Match trophy. During the evening, presentations were made to : Under 9 Boys, James Burnham, Archie Grist and Freddie Witcher. Under 9 Girls, Anouska Day, Lucy Burnham and Sophie Gray. Under 11 Boys. Bowling Harry Lazaruk, Batting Ben Chanter, Fielding William Mander. Under 13 Girls, Poppy Winnicott, Charlotte Minford and Stella Atkins. Under 13 boys. Bowling Sam Phillips, Batting Joe Littlewood and Fielding Mackenzie Hughes.
Congratulations to all the players and a big thank you from the Club to Angela Gray, Adam Lazaruk and Terry Gardsby who yet again energetically headed up the Chearsley Cricket Club Junior Section and to Dave Richards and all other coaches who have made this season another memorable one.

Pothole Problem
Chearsley Parish council is asking all villagers who are concerned about the very poor and sometimes dangerous state of the village roads to contact Bucks County Council to complain. Transport for Bucks can be contacted by phoning 0845 2302882. Chearsley Council feel that constant complaints to the Local Authority might eventually result in the village roads being mended.
