Cricketers appeal for return of club’s ‘crown jewels’

Following a break in to their pavilion during the night of Friday 22nd March, Chearsley Cricket Club are appealing for the return of all their club trophies.

Thieves broke into the pavilion and among the items taken were the entire contents of the club trophy cabinet.

“Our membership is absolutely devastated by last week’s events, as we put the finishing touches to our preparations for the 2019 season” said Club Chairman, Ian Houseman

“If the break in wasn’t bad enough on its own, the theft of all our club trophies is absolutely heartbreaking. These cups, including my own Chairman’s Cup, are of little commercial value but are a major part of our club’s proud heritage. For our members they represent our ‘crown jewels’.

“We would urge those who took them to show a little compassion and decency by returning them to us. This could be done anonymously by leaving them by the entrance gate to the ground.”

Chearsley Cricket Club, founded in 1922, was reborn in its current ground on the Winchendon Road just outside the village in 1990. In addition to fielding two teams in the Cherwell League, the club has developed a flourishing Juniors section, whose membership of around 90 youngsters includes over 40 girls.

Jo Hinton

Jo died on February 12th in The Sue Ryder Hospice in Nettlebed. Lung cancer was diagnosed in February last year and she had deteriorated over the last months, but nevertheless making a great effort to attend the funeral of an old friend and neighbour Audrey Cooper in December. Jo and her husband John moved to Chearsley in 1968, living first in Sunbeams, School Lane, now called Saw Pit Cottage, later moving to one of the converted barns at the top of School Lane where she lived until they moved to Wendover in 2013.
Jo trained as a nurse at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and worked at Hulcott Nursing Home before becoming a Practice Nurse at Thame. She also worked at Chilton House and Hempton Fields Nursing Home caring for the elderly. Jo was a very lively, sociable lady who enriched Chearsley life in many ways, not least as a member of the Chearsley Cherry Bumpers team (a female equivalent of Morris Men), a member of the ladies Cricket team and also helping out at Manor Farm, picking potatoes. She is missed by her many friends in Chearsley and work colleagues.

Historic Chearsley - A date for your Diary Sunday June 2
John Howard writes:
Following a number of informal discussions, a small group of Chearsley residents got together during January to discuss the possibility of starting a project which would build on the work of Ted Hooton’s wonderful book “Chearsley – Living Through History” and bring the story up to the present day. As a result, the Village Hall has been booked for Sunday June 2 where we hope to share with the village a number of fascinating resources, many of which most of you will not have seen before.
We would also ask you to share anything that you feel might be of interest which would add to our understanding of the story of Chearsley, however long ago or more recent. For example, photos, family memorabilia or reminiscences. We are hoping to set up a small exhibition along the lines of the recent, successful Centenary of World War 1 Exhibition, so there is room for all to make a contribution however small! We are also delighted to announce that , following Ann Hooton’s kind permission, Keith Turnbull has sponsored the production of a digital version of Ted’s book and this can now be downloaded from here. It is a large file, so you may need to be patient.
If you have anything that would contribute to our exhibition, we would be delighted to receive it or if you would be interested in joining our group at its future meetings, please contact any of the following: Anne Adams paxos.aa@gmail.com John Cragg johncragg181@gmail.com John Howard jnh@dbmc.co.uk and Sara Turnbull sjt3456@gmail.com

Village Pot Holes
Our Parish Councillors are to be congratulated on their success over the past few weeks, in getting most of the pot holes in the village roads, particularly School Lane and Shupps Lane, mended by AVDC. The above collected over 20 sacks of litter from Chearsley’s lanes and approach roads and this year’s” trophies” included three tyres, assorted road signs, a cupboard door, a toilet cistern and a shedload of beer cans.
